The rest of the morning was quieter, more relaxed. They talked about their visit, volunteer work, and plans while enjoying coffee.

There was an ease between them that hadn’t been there before, a sense of closeness that went beyond words.

Later, as they stood by the front door, ready to go about their separate days, he reached for her hand again. She glanced up at him, her heart doing a little flip at the warmth in his eyes.

“We’ll see where this goes,” he said, his voice soft but firm. “But one thing hasn’t changed.”

She tilted her head slightly. “What’s that?”

He smiled, a teasing glint in his eyes. “I still think you’re the most stubborn woman I’ve ever met.”

She laughed, the sound light and full of genuine joy, and shook her head. “And you’re still the most infuriating man I’ve ever known.”

He chuckled, squeezing her hand one last time before letting it go. “See you later?”

“Yeah,” she said, her smile softening. “Yes, I’ll see you later.”

As he walked out the door, she stood there for a moment, watching him go, her heart full but still cautious.

They had a long way to go, but at least they were finally taking the first steps. Together.
